April Is Here And The Garden Begins To Grow

My favorite season is when the mosquitoes are too cold to bite.

April 2023 And Trellis Time!

We wanted beans, peas, cucumber, and several other "climbing" veggies to be seen as well as easily picked so we built trellises between the beds. Great fun and a new experience.

The lady from Arkansas made it look simple and it was. With help from Paul's trusty sidekick, Tonto (otherwise known as Dr. Mary), we had the trellises up and running in about an hour.

Stir fry, here I come!

Did You Know? - Broccoli Leaves Are Edible – Garden Betty You can eat broccoli leaves raw or you can cook them a number of ways; heat makes them sweeter. If you pick younger broccoli leaves off the plant, they're tender enough to toss raw into a salad or stuff into a sandwich.

Broccoli leaves hold their own among super foods like kale, chard, and other dark, leafy greens. Like the florets, they are loaded with sought after vitamins A, C, and K as well as fiber, thiamine, niacin, calcium, iron, and potassium.

We finally found some red maple trees for the front yard!

Did You Know? - Few people know that red maple foliage can turn yellow or orange in the fall too. Red maples are fast-growing trees that usually reach 60 to 90 feet (18 to 27 meters) in height. The largest ones can grow more than 120 feet (36.5 meters) tall. Red maples are native to the eastern deciduous forest.

This was a 6" plant in 1990 when my cousin gave it to me when my Mom passed away! It was terribly root bound so now she has a new home.

Did You Know? - Most commonly plants are grown in containers where the roots begin to circle and take the shape of their pot. The root balls that have been exposed to this scenario have a very high chance of developing circling or girdling roots that will become problematic and possibly detrimental to the tree or plant's health in the future. To manage this problem, it is best to remove any circling roots where you see them visible. Experts from Clemson University suggest making several slice marks in the root ball from the top to the bottom going 1 to 2 inches deep as this has been found to have positive effects.[5] They have found these cuts cause new regenerative roots to be formed behind the wounds which aid in the plant establishing roots in the new location.

The white corn should be ready in about eight weeks.

Did You Know? - White corn has an elongated, straight, and cylindrical appearance, averaging 10 to 25 centimeters in length, and is encased in many layers of light green husks. Within the tightly wrapped husk, each layer is textured, fibrous, and semi-rough, and surrounding the cob is a layer of delicate pale yellow corn silks. One ear of White corn can contain 200 to 400 kernels, and the small, oval to oblong plump kernels grow in rows extending the length of the cob. White corn kernels have a tender, succulent, and crisp consistency when ripe due to their high sugar content, but as it ages, the kernels will transform their sugar into starch, creating a tougher, chewier, and doughier texture. The kernels also bear a white to cream-colored surface and a white interior. White corn will range in texture and flavor, depending on the variety, but the kernels are generally mild, sweet, and subtly nutty.

We made the two flower beds by the house into herb gardens. (The stuff" at the base of the sign is garbage which we will dig into the dirt to feed the worms)
