Thanksgiving 2011 Was A Great Celebration

The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts.  No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.  ~H.U. Westermayer

We have much to celebrate having good health, wonderful friends, and a beautiful marriage.... Life is indeed good!!

The Day Started Early And Sad... Saying Good Bye To Dave

Dave's grand daughter came to get "Old Squeeky" this morning bright and early. We had it ready to go as we had taken it to the local 76 station and had it made "safe to drive". Dave loved that old tugboat and kept it in pretty good shape for many years.

By the time Dave's health got so poor, we was not starting it or driving it so we had major issues with the fluids and brakes. It was drivable but with additional strange sounds. We hope it has a good life in Arizona.

The Day Got Better When We Headed For Old Ranch

Today is also the birthday of James Cathey who is home cooking away for his family! Happy birthday big guy! We really missed him at breakfast and during the round of golf.... There is always next year.

Ice turkey on display

Did You Know? - Ice sculpture is a form of sculpture that uses ice as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. Ice sculptures are generally associated with special or extravagant events because of their limited lifetime. The lifetime of a sculpture is determined primarily by the temperature of its environment and thus, a sculpture can last from mere minutes to possibly months.

The hams were magnificent this evening

Did You Know? - The word ham is derived from the Old English ham or hom meaning the hollow or bend of the knee.

The crab legs had been a favorite and about 100 pounds disappeared today

Did You Know? - Crabs are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton, and armed with a single pair of chelae (claws). Crabs are found in all of the world's oceans, while many crabs live in fresh water and on land, particularly in tropical regions. Crabs vary in size from the pea crab, a few millimetres wide, to the Japanese spider crab, with a leg span of up to 4 metres (13 ft).

An ice cornucopia

Did You Know? - The cornucopia (in Latin also cornu copiae) or horn of plenty is a symbol of abundance and nourishment, commonly a large horn-shaped container overflowing with produce, flowers, nuts, other edibles, or wealth in some form. Originating in classical antiquity, it has continued as a symbol in Western art, and in North America is particularly associated with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Remember - Stand up, on this Thanksgiving Day, stand upon your feet.  Believe in man.  Soberly and with clear eyes, believe in your own time and place.  There is not, and there never has been a better time, or a better place to live in.  ~Phillips Brooks

Marshmallow and chocolate.... Yumm!

Did You Know? - The marshmallow is a confection that, in its modern form, typically consists of sugar, corn syrup, water, gelatin that has been softened in hot water, dextrose, vanilla flavourings, and sometimes coloring, whipped to a spongy consistency. Some marshmallow recipes call for egg whites. This confection is the modern version of a medicinal confection made from Althaea officinalis, the marshmallow plant.

The marshmallow probably first came into being as a medicinal substance, since the mucilaginous extracts comes from the root of the marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, which were used as a remedy for sore throats. Concoctions of other parts of the marshmallow plant had medical uses as well. The root has been used since Egyptian antiquity in a honey-sweetened confection useful in the treatment of sore throat. The later French version of the recipe, called pâte de guimauve (or "guimauve" for short), included an egg white meringue and was often flavored with rose water. Pâte de guimauve more closely resembles contemporary commercially available marshmallows, which no longer contain any marshmallow plant.

Mr. Ice Turkey

Thanksgiving 2011
You can almost hear him gobble

Did You Know? - When Europeans first encountered turkeys on the American continent, they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guineafowl (Numididae). Guineafowl were also known as turkey fowl (or turkey hen and turkey cock) because they were imported to Central Europe through Turkey. The name turkey fowl, shortened to just the name of the country, stuck as the name of the American bird.
