On Halloween morning, Paul and Mary drove to Roger's Gardens, determined to find decorations classy enough for Mary's angel costume and silly enough for Paul's plan to become a "charpie," which he explained was "a wrinkled Chinese dog with excellent posture."
Mary tried on glittery wings and a halo that kept sliding over one eye. Paul wore a beige blanket, taped-on wrinkles, and floppy ears made from old oven mitts. At Roger's Gardens, strangers politely asked if he was a dumpling, a couch cushion, or someone's confused grandfather. Paul simply barked with dignity.
That evening, they arrived at the Annual Elks Halloween Ball at the Santa Ana Lodge, where their friends cheered so loudly Mary's halo fell into the punch. Roger rescued it with a ladle, declaring it "divinely marinated."
They danced the Monster Mash, laughed until their masks slipped, and posed for photos with witches, pirates, and one suspicious Elvis. Paul won "Most Likely to Need Ironing," while Mary received "Best Heavenly Attitude."
By midnight they were tired, sticky with punch, and ridiculously happy. Mary hugged Paul and said, "Next year, you're the angel."
Paul wagged his oven-mitt ears and replied, "Only if I can drool glitter beautifully everywhere."
