Bye Bye Gunk! Early October 2025!
I have had a 100% blocked carotid artery for years on the left side but recently the right side has been getting worse and worse. Finally because of my afib issues, the heart doctor I needed to get the right side taken care of so the ablation procedure and get fixed!
Carotid artery operations, such as carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid stenting (CAS), are performed to remove plaque buildup from the carotid arteries to improve blood flow and prevent stroke. CEA involves surgically opening the artery to remove the blockage, while CAS uses a stent to hold the artery open. Both procedures have associated risks, and aftercare involves monitoring, pain management, and a gradual return to normal activities.
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) Procedure: A surgeon makes an incision in the neck to access the carotid artery, clamps it to temporarily stop blood flow, and removes the plaque buildup.
Closure: The artery is then stitched shut or a patch is added to widen it, and the incision is closed. Anesthesia: Usually performed under general anesthesia, but local anesthesia may be used to monitor brain function during the procedure.
Into the OR I go after a tearful hug with my amazing wife. In 90 minutes they opened me up, cleared out the gunk, and gave me a beautiful scare down the side of my neck. Easy piezy!
