July 4th 2008 With Kat Robinson

"Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. I'm not ashamed of that, never have been, never will be." -- John Wayne

Kat Celebrates The 4th Of July

Kat Robinson is our cousin who is suffering with mild dementia. Dementia (from Latin de- "apart, away" + mens (genitive mentis) "mind") is the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be expected from normal aging. Although dementia is far more common in the geriatric population, it may occur in any stage of adulthood. This age cutoff is defining, as similar sets of symptoms due to organic brain dysfunction are given different names in populations younger than adulthood (see, for instance, developmental disorders).

In her case she remembers things from the past very well but cannot retain recent memories... The last ten years is a blank and she cannot retain memories for more than 15 minutes.  But she knows us and that is good!

It is sad but it is what it is so we care for her and are going to make sure she has a nice 4th of July at her home.  Here are some pictures from the event.
