The Preamble As Written By Judge Hickok

We are gathered today to join together JOHN SCHULTE and ERNIE CAZARES in holy matrimony.  The act of uniting a man and a woman in marriage is one of the oldest, most sacred and dearest ceremonies known to man.  A civil ceremony, such as we are holding today, is just as legal, far-reaching and binding as the most solemn religious ceremony.

Marriage is commended to us to be honorable among all persons; and is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly; but reverently, discreetly and soberly.  Now, into this sacred relationship come these two persons now to be joined.

The union of husband and wife in heart, body and mind is intended for their mutual joy, and to help and comfort each other.  The bond that unites man and woman in marriage is more than legal, financial, emotional, physical or social; it is total and forever.  It is an awareness of each other’s worth.  Love, together with a close friendship is the essence of a happy marriage.

Paul writes in 1st Corinthians:  “Love is patient; love is kind, and is not jealous.  Love does not brag it is not arrogant.  Love does nothing rude; it is not self-seeking; it is not prone to anger; it does not brood over injuries.  Love is not happy over unrighteousness, but rejoices along with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes for all things, and endures all things.  Here and now there are three gifts that endure; faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.”

Ernie, John, you have both known the joy of a happily married life.  You’ve known the security of having a life companion and soul mate.  You’ve experienced the fulfillment of raising a family.

You also have known the pain of losing a beloved spouse in the prime of life; the disappointment of shattered dreams and the following despair of loneliness.

But you were blessed by having such wonderful spouses.  Ernie, Dick loved you, he was a good man, great dad and provided for all of your needs.  John, Gail was a beautiful person both inside and out; she was vivacious, outspoken and loved you and her kids with all of her heart.

Both of your spouses enriched your lives in many ways.  Your decision to remarry honors them.   While they cannot ever be replaced and will always be part of you, you now embark on a new chapter in your lives.  You have fulfilled your pledge of loving them “till death do us part”.  You are now relieved of that commitment and free to pledge your love once again to another.

As you have both walked through the “valley of the shadow of death” you may now declare that “surely goodness and mercy will follow me the rest of my day.”

Ernie, you and John have a lot in common; not only your love for golf and your dancing prowess, but your love for everyone around you.  John, Ernie has shown to you her generosity and giving spirit; her independence but also a tender hearted woman. Ernie, John has shown to you his thoughtful attentiveness to you and others; someone totally comfortable in his own skin; a successful and accomplished man who has nothing to prove, just a huge capacity to love.

You two are perfect for each other.  We approve!

The Vows

John, repeat after me:

Ernie, repeat after me:

I Ernie, take you John to be my husband. I pledge to share my life openly with you, to be faithful to you always, to speak the truth to you with compassion and love. I promise to honor and tenderly care for you, to cherish and respect you as long as we both shall live.

The ring is a symbol of your marriage; symbolic of the fact that you have this day pledged yourselves in marriage and as the ring is a perfect circle without end, it is the wish and hope of all that your marriage will be as perfect and likewise will be without end.

John, repeat after me:

Ernie, I give you this ring as a symbol of our unbroken unity, everlasting devotion and encircling love.

Ernie, repeat after me:

John, I give you this ring as a symbol of our unbroken unity, everlasting devotion and encircling love.

now, inasmuch as John and Ernie have consented together in wedlock, have given and pledged their love and faithfulness, each to the other, and have declared the same by exchanging their vows and rings;

Now by virtue of the authority vested in me by the State of California, I pronounce you to be husband and wife.

For the first time, please kiss as husband and wife.
