Albuquerque To Taos

We decided to take two days going back so off we go to Taos and then through Farmington.  Estimated Time: 2.0 hours 24 minutes Estimated Distance: 132.13 miles and it goes through Santa Fe.

Santa Fe New Mexico

Santa Fe (Navajo: Yootó) is the capital of the state of New Mexico. It is the third-largest city in the state and is the seat of Santa Fe County. Santa Fe had a population of 62,203 at the April 1, 2000 census; the estimate for July 1, 2006, is 72,056.

Santa Fe was originally envisioned as an important stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. But as the tracks progressed into New Mexico, the civil engineers decided that it was more practical to go through Lamy, a town in Santa Fe County to the south of Santa Fe. The result was a gradual economic decline. This was reversed in part through the creation of a number of resources for the arts and archaeology, notably the School of American Research, created in 1907 under the leadership of the prominent archaeologist Edgar Lee Hewett. The first aeroplane to fly over Santa Fe was piloted by Rose Dugan, carrying Vera von Blumenthal as passenger. Together they started the development of the Pueblo Indian pottery industry, a major contribution to the founding of the annual Santa Fe Indian Market. In 1912, New Mexico became the country's 47th state, with Santa Fe as its capital.

Taos New Mexico

Albuquerque to Taos

Taos calls itself the "Town of Taos" and was incorporated as such in 1934. As of the 2000 census, its population was 4,700.

Being located close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American village and tribe from which it takes its name, it is also the county seat of Taos County.

The name also refers to the nearby ski resort of Taos Ski Valley. The word 'Taos' means 'red willow' in the Tiwa language. Many people in Taos have experienced what is termed the Taos Hum, a noise whose source and nature are a mystery for those who claim to have heard it, and for which a variety of theories have been advanced.

The lore of this phenomenon has become part of the appeal of this unique community which has many quirks and urban legends.
