The Annual Art Deco Ball On The Queen Mary
Whether it’s strolling around in a smoking jacket while watching a silent movie or sitting in on lectures on art deco architecture or the golden age of travel and fashions of the art deco period, the fifth annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival will have plenty to fill the art deco lover’s heart. About 500 aficionados from across the United States and even Europe are expected to convene on the historic ocean liner Friday through Sunday for a weekend of all things deco.

The highlight of the Festival will be the Saturday evening Art Deco Ball. The Reception will be in the Windsor Salon at 7 p.m., followed by a four-course dinner at 8 p.m. in the Grand Salon.
"Dean Mora and his Orchestra" are back by popular demand, and there will be dancing until midnight.
Proceeds will benefit the conservation and restoration of the art and interiors of the historic Queen Mary, and a portion of the cost is tax deductible.

Join us for the annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival, presented by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, in association with the Queen Mary, on Labor Day Weekend aboard the beautiful Art Deco Queen Mary in Long Beach. This weekend is filled with tours, lectures, pajama party, the Art Deco Bazaar, vintage car display, a grand Art Deco Ball with music by Mora's Modern Rhythmists, tea dance with music by the Paul Frederick Orchestra, Cocktails in Historic Places at the Verandah Grill with music by Jim Ziegler and the Swingsations, and so much more. The proceeds from all activities will benefit conservation and restoration of the original art aboard the 1936 ocean liner.
Dean More And His Orchestra
"Dean Mora and his Orchestra" is a thirteen-piece ensemble devoted to playing classic jazz and swing tunes of the 1920s and early 1930s. Using period arrangements and transcriptions from the original recordings, this group has established itself as one of the foremost interpreters of early big-band music.
The group was formed in 1994 by Dean Mora, a Los Angeles-area pianist, whose interest in the 1920s and 1930s was forged early on as a child. Their repertoire first consisted of popular jazz hits of the '20s and '30s, but soon started to include tunes that would be considered precursors to swing.
This was reflected in their first CD, "My Favorite Band," released in 1996. Their second CD, "Mr. Rhythmist Goes to Town," was released in 1999, and the third, "Call of the Freaks," in 2000.
They have performed at The Derby in Los Angeles where, for three years, their Monday night performances gained a cult following. They have also performed at the Hollywood Paladium, The Wiltern Theatre, the Avalon Casino Ballroom, the Alex Theatre, the Wilshire Ebell Club, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the Biltmore, Hotel, the Oviatt Building, and at both the Los Angeles and Orpheum Theatres in downtown Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Conservancy's hugely popular "Last Remaining Seats" series. They also have performed at many events and jazz festivals.
Art Deco Will Always Be In
Did you know? - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style "originated in the twenties" and continued to be employed until after World War Two. The term "art deco" "came into general usage soon after a 1966 exhibition", referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.
