Did You Know? - A WAlter Lantz cartoon circa 1939! Synopsis: Old man gambles his welfare check away, then his mortgage (I think they meant "deed"; a mortgage is a debt secured with real property; in order for it to have value to someone it was traded to, the person giving it away would need to be in the position of the lender or the lender's successor in interest; while this is not impossible (see the securitization of sub prime mortgages recently), it seems more likely they just don't know what they're talking about); the gambling house proprietor Ratbone offers to give up the "mortgage" if the gambler's daughter Nell will marry him; instead, she hussies herself close enough to steal the mortgage, a blonde hero beats up the "villain", and the gambler shoves metal into the unconscious Ratbone and steals back the mortgage.

Did You Know? - A subconjunctival hemorrhage (or subconjunctival hemorrhage) also known as hyposphagma, is bleeding underneath the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva contains many small, fragile blood vessels that are easily ruptured or broken. When this happens, blood leaks into the space between the conjunctiva and sclera.

Whereas a bruise typically appears black or blue underneath the skin, a subconjunctival hemorrhage initially appears bright red underneath the transparent conjunctiva. Later the hemorrhage may spread and become green or yellow, like a bruise. Usually this disappears within 2 weeks. Although its appearance may be alarming, a subconjunctival hemorrhage is generally a painless and harmless condition.

Donna has a story to tell!

Story time: So, once upon a time many moons ago High School Donna was with several friends in Corona Del Mar walking on the beach. They spotted a sea lion on the beach and their male companions began teasing the sea lion. It seems also the boys had beer with them and the girls all shared one single beer (that's her story and she is sticking to it).

The police show up to stop the teasing and direct the party off the beach and lined them up along a flower bed wall. Donna saw the police sniffing the breath of the other kids so she reached behind her and began chewing the grass in the planter. After several chomps of grass the police office got to her, sniffed her breath and said "I can't about this one... I do NOT smell any beer!".

So.... It's a good idea to carry GREEN grass with you at all times.

Herb and Irene head out a little early this evening

Did You Know? Herb had some bone cancer scraped out and a metal plate put onto the arm to strengthen the bone. Some bone tumors may weaken the structure of the bone, causing pathologic fractures. A pathologic fracture is a broken bone caused by disease leading to weakness of the bone. This process is most commonly due to osteoporosis, but may also be due to other pathologies such as: cancer, infection, inherited bone disorders,or a bone cyst.

Sometimes bones are reinforced with metal. These implants must be designed and installed with care. Stress shielding occurs when plates or screws carry too large of a portion of the bone's load, causing atrophy. This problem is reduced, but not eliminated, by the use of low-modulus materials, including titanium and its alloys. The heat generated by the friction of installing hardware can easily accumulate and damage bone tissue, reducing the strength of the connections. If dissimilar metals are installed in contact with one another (i.e., a titanium plate with cobalt-chromium alloy or stainless steel screws), galvanic corrosion will result. The metal ions produced can damage the bone locally and may cause systemic effects as well.
