Some Of What We Saw

"Come Unto Me"

Did You Know? - Johann Michael Ferdinand Heinrich Hofmann (March 19, 1824-June 23, 1911) was a German painter of the late 19th to early 20th century. He was the uncle of the German painter Ludwig von Hofmann. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany and died in Dresden, Germany. He is best known for his many paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ.

Did You Know? - The Well of Moses (fr: Puits de Moïse) is a monumental sculpture recognised as the masterpiece of the Dutch artist Claus Sluter (1340-1405/6). It was executed by Sluter and his workshop in 1395–1403 for the Carthusian monastery of Chartreuse de Champmol built as a burial site by the Burgundian Duke Philip the Bold just outside the Burgundian capital of Dijon, now in France.

Did You Know? - Ecce Homo (pronounced [ˈɛtːʃe ˈomo] or [ˈɛkː ˈomo]) are the Latin words used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgate translation of the John 19:5, when he presents a scourged Jesus Christ, bound and crowned with thorns, to a hostile crowd shortly before his Crucifixion. The original Greek is Ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄνθρωπος (Idou ho Anthrōpos). The King James Version translates the phrase into English as Behold the Man. The scene is widely depicted in Christian art.

Cold soup... Great selection on a hot day

Did You Know? - Cold soups are a particular variation on the traditional soup, wherein the temperature when served is kept at or below room temperature. They may be sweet or savory. In summer, sweet cold soups can form part of a dessert tray. An example of a savory chilled soup is gazpacho, a chilled vegetable-based soup originating from Spain. Naengguk, Korean chilled soup, is particularly popular during summer.

Its a shoot out

Did You Know? - A shoot out is a gun battle between armed groups. A shoot out often, but not necessarily, pits law enforcement against criminal elements; it could also involve two groups outside of law enforcement, such as rival gangs. A shoot out in a military context (i.e. regularly constituted armed forces or even guerrilla or insurgent forces) would usually be considered a battle or firefight (depending on size), rather than a shoot out. Shootouts are often portrayed in action films. Read more... Shoot outs in history

Skirt steak

Did You Know? - The term skirt steak refers to a cut of beef steak, from the plate. It is a long, flat cut that is prized for its flavor rather than tenderness. Sometimes a flank steak is used interchangeably with a skirt steak, but it is a different cut of meat.

In the United States, the NAMP (North American Meat Processors Association) classifies all skirts steaks NAMP 121. NAMP 121 is further subdivided into the outer (outside) skirt steak (NAMP 121C) and the inner (inside) skirt steak (NAMP 121D). The Beef Flank Steak (NAMP 193) is a cut that is different from the skirt steak.

The outside skirt steak is the trimmed, boneless portion of the diaphragm muscle attached to the 6th through 12th ribs on the underside of the short plate. This steak is covered in a tough membrane that should be removed before cooking.

The inside skirt steak is a boneless portion of the flank trimmed free of fat and membranes.

Skirt steak is the cut of choice for making fajitas, Northern Mexican arrachera, Cornish pasties, Chinese stir-fry, Cuban Churrasco, and authentic Bolognese Sauce.

To minimize their toughness skirt steaks are either grilled or pan-seared very quickly or cooked very slowly, typically braised. Because of their strong graining skirt steak is sliced across the grain for maximum tenderness. To aid in tenderness and flavor, they are also often marinated.

The skirt steak is sometimes called Roumanian Tenderloin or Roumanian Strip in New York deli restaurants and steak houses. It is commonly grilled or barbecued whole and often served with fried onions and potatoes or baked beans.

Sam went for fish and chips

Did You Know? - Fish and chips is a popular take-away food that originated in the United Kingdom in 1858 or 1863. It consists of battered (or sometimes breadcrumbed) fish (traditionally cod or in Australia, flake, but sometimes haddock or plaice), deep-fried and accompanied by deep-fried 'slab-cut' chips. Popular tradition associates the dish with the United Kingdom and Ireland. The dish remains very popular in the UK and in areas colonised by British people in the mid 19th century, when the dish originated such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The United States has more recently developed it as a staple derived from Canadian and Irish expatriates, but the dish is not considered common outside Lent. It has also been popular in the Faroe Islands since the 1940s, when it was introduced during the British occupation of the Islands during World War II.

Yes... It is pink

Did You Know? - In early 1955, Elvis bought his first Cadillac, a 1954 model, which had been re-sprayed pink. The car provided transport for Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys, but after the failure of a brake lining, was destroyed in a roadside fire between Hope and Texarkana, Arkansas, on June 5, 1955.
