Golf... A Pleasant Pastime

Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic.

Old Ranch Country Club

Here are some "snapshots" during a week at Old Ranch Country Club.  They are random taken when interesting events occur. Please enjoy! Our initial visit to Old Ranch didn't come close to showing us how great it was to be a member! We have met several neat people including the Handson's from New Jersey.  December is a super time to play golf at Old Ranch as they remove the snow daily!

Of course, anytime is wonderful at Old Ranch.  Please see our Old Ranch Adventures as they unfold.  We enjoy the grounds and the animals that make up Old Ranch. Snapshots Around Old Ranch are always fun to visit.

Winter At Old Ranch
A C-141 from the US Marines was doing "Touch & Go's" from the local Joint Forces Reserve Training Center adjacent to the club. This did not seem to bother the birds.  The club house is in the center of the picture.

Beautiful birds

The American White Pelican's came to stay for about three months.

They are a very large (50"–70") white bird with black wing tips and a long, wide orange bill. They have a wing span of up to 110 inches.

They feed while swimming. Each bird eats more than 4 pounds of fish a day, mostly carp, chubs, shiners, yellow perch, catfish, and jackfish.  We could see them eat fish all day from the lakes on the course!

White Pelicans nest in colonies of several hundred pairs on islands in remote brackish and freshwater lakes of inland North America.

They winter in California and along the Pacific coast of Guatemala; also along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

Dinner At The Club

Winter At Old Ranch
Chris does magic preparing a meal in the great dining room at the club!  The staff is outstanding all with personalities that makes the club feel like home!

Winter At Old Ranch
Vicky and Del clowning around.  Del just had an eye operation so naturally we accused Vicky of hitting him... She reenacted the assumed event!  No one believed it!

Winter At Old Ranch
Vince and Nancy are friends from other dance venues and they love coming with us to the club to dance to the Simon and Simon Duo.  The spinach salad is a favorite.

The View Is Fantastic

Winter At Old Ranch
Mt. Baldy 65 miles away

Those mountains called Mt Baldy (but really Mount San Antonio) are about fifty miles away! Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Mount San Antonio has two summits. The eastern summit is higher at an elevation of 10,064 feet while the west is at 9,988 feet. In winter, Mount Baldy's snow-capped peaks are usually visible on clear days and dominate the view of the Los Angeles skyline.

Right After The Rain The Skies Were Clearing

Winter At Old Ranch
Sue is about to put her ball on the green from the 2nd hole fairway.  The skies were dramatic as the weather front passed to the east!

Winter At Old Ranch
A little brisk out today, in the low 60's!  We sent this picture to family in Connecticut just to make them think about a visit!

Winter At Old Ranch
Another storm front was heading into the basin today.  The weather fronts came in every few days for about three weeks!

Winter At Old Ranch
Nothing (well, mostly nothing) keeps us off the fairways even with "chance of rain 70%" predictions!  That means, 30% chance it will not rain!

Good Bye Rain And Let The Snow Show Through!

Winter At Old Ranch
A view from the Pro-Shop at Old Ranch... Fifty miles away someone is freezing in the snow!  In Seal Beach, it is golf time!

Winter At Old Ranch
A view from the dining room during breakfast.  If you look carefully, some folks are already returning and are on the 18th hole!

The lake provided a great mirror effect!

OK, lunch is over and time to hit the 10th hole.  Fountains are flowing, birds are singing, and the drive of the day awaits..... someone!
