Hans Got Up Extra Early And Baked A Cake

Celebrating at Newport Harbor with friends 10/6/2013
Hans has been busy making a birthday cake... Black Forest Cake

Did You Know? - Black Forest gâteau (British English) and Black Forest cake (American English and Australian English) are the English names for the German dessert Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (pronounced [ˈʃvaʁt͡svɛldɐ ˈkɪʁʃˌtɔʁtə]), literally "Black Forest cherry torte". Black Forest cake originated in Germany.

Typically, Black Forest cake consists of several layers of chocolate cake, with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. Then the cake is decorated with additional whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chocolate shavings. In some European traditions sour cherries are used both between the layers and for decorating the top.

Traditionally, Kirschwasser (a clear liquor distilled from tart cherries) is added to the cake, although other liquors are also used (such as rum, which is common in Austrian recipes). In the United States, Black Forest cake is most often prepared without alcohol (Unless Hans does the preparations)

German statutory interpretation states Kirschwasser as a mandatory ingredient, otherwise the cake is legally not allowed to be marketed as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. True Black Forest cakes are decorated with black cherries. A small tip: if black cherries are not available, use glacee cherries dipped in melted chocolate.

The wine carafes seem to be disappearing

Did You Know? - The carafe /kəˈræf/, is a container without handles used for serving wine and other drinks. Unlike the related decanter, carafes do not include stoppers.

Coffee pots included in coffee makers are also referred to as carafes.

In France, carafes are commonly used to serve water. To order a carafe d'eau ("carafe of water") is to request to be served (free) tap water rather than bottled water at a cost.

The original lyrics to the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill included the phrase "to fetch a carafe of water" instead of the more commonly known "to fetch a pail of water.

Celebrating at Newport Harbor with friends 10/6/2013
NO! Please no frisbee in the parking lot

Did You Know? - A flying disc is a disc-shaped gliding object or toy that is generally plastic and roughly 20 to 25 cm (7.9 to 9.8 in) in diameter with a lip, used recreationally for throwing and catching, for example, in flying disc games. The shape of the disc, an airfoil in cross-section, allows it to fly by generating lift as it moves through the air while spinning.

The term Frisbee, often used capitalized, to generically describe all flying discs, is a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company. Though such use is not encouraged by the company, the common use of the name as a generic term has put the trademark in jeopardy; accordingly, many "Frisbee" games are now known as "ultimate" or "disc" games.
